Attracting more residents into nephrology.

چکیده
Understanding what attracts trainees to a specialty, in this case nephrology, is elusive. Some factors relate to the individual, their personality andneeds; some factors are related to the field, including characteristics of daily work, patient problems, and an individual’s experience with nephrology and the people; and other factors are idiosyncratic. The reduced number of nephrology fellowship applicants, and particularly US-educated medical graduates, has recently been documented (1,2). In this issue ofCJASN, Shah et al. (3) report results, analyze trends, and recommend changes based on data from a survey about career choice selection and satisfaction among nephrology fellows. This analysis derives from responses of almost one-quarter of fellows, all of whom were surveyed in June 2011.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Many patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are seen by primary care physicians who may not be aware of indications or benefits of timely nephrologist referral. Late referral to a nephrologist may lead to suboptimal pre-end stage renal disease care and greater mortality. It is not known whether current postgraduate training adequately prepares a future internist in...
متن کاملTeaching renal physiology in the 21st century: focus on acid-base physiology.
A thorough understanding of renal physiology, and in particular acid-base physiology, is essential for an understanding of nephrology. Difficulties in both teaching and learning this material are major impediments to attracting medical trainees into nephrology. Approaches to teaching renal physiology include collaborative learning, computer-based learning and laboratory-based learning. Computer...

A workforce crisis for many pediatric specialties, particularly nephrology, is due to growing retirement rates, attrition during training, and retention difficulties. To obtain specific information regarding pediatric nephrology trainee shortages, we administered two cross-sectional surveys to non-renal pediatric subspecialty fellows and pediatric nephrology program directors. We characterized ...
